Disney On Ice #DreamBig in Youngstown Recap

What a fun night for my family!  Truly, my boys had a blast and I forgot how great the Disney on Ice shows are.  This show has about 10 short stories filled with your favorite songs from Disney Movies.  Some of these include:  Frozen, Moana, Coco, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent, Tangled, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid.

Cohen

My kids love Disney Movies and love the songs.  Being that each story was just a short recap with songs, the show really moved along and kept the kids engaged the entire time.  My kids were clapping along and just having a great time.

Caleb

Ariel
Tips from me if you are going to the show:  #1 Parking in the lot at Covelli is $10 Cash.  There is another lot offering parking, but it is the same price and farther away.  So if you see the first “parking for $10″, don’t be duped- Covelli is also $10 and you will be much closer!

Disney has a ton of souvenir stands, so arrive early if you are planning to get souvenirs- the lines at the Disney Merchandise stands were not very long at all.  They had those fun light up toys, some plush, Shaved Ice in cups, Lemonade to drink, Popcorn, and Cotton Candy.  There is a concession stand with what I would call “real” food.  This is separate from the Disney Merchandise and snacks.  The line also moved very slow- but the food was DELICIOUS, so if you need to eat at the show, make sure you arrive early enough to hit up both stands.  I had to work, so we were pushing it to get to the show on time and opted to eat there.

They do come around with souvenirs, popcorn, shaved ice, and cotton candy to the seats at this show too.

I hope you get a chance to check out the show this weekend, it is definitely a good one!!

Crayola Experience Activities

A must do for Preschoolers: The Crayola Experience Orlando

My family visited Orlando earlier this month and while we were there, we decided to check out some things to do that were not going to be long days, trying to take it easy after a full day of traveling.  The Crayola Experience has been on my list since it opened, but we haven’t been down to Orlando since then with an opportunity to check it out.

Crayola Experience Activities

My little guys are 3 and 4, and I felt like they were the PERFECT age for The Crayola Experience.  Caleb, who is 4 (starting Kindergarten next fall) was truly into everything they had to offer.  He really enjoys crafts and constructive things to do, so he fully took advantage of every activity that was available.  Cohen, who is 3, enjoyed a lot of the activities, but his attention span was not really there to enjoy EVERYTHING or at least not at the level Caleb was able to enjoy it, but there was still a lot for him to do and see and he had a really great time.Crayola Experience Life Size Dry Erase

When we got there the kids were so excited about the bright colors and interactive giant screens in the lobby.  Dad took them over to play with the screens while I got us all checked in and asked some questions to make sure I understood how everything worked.  I got all the information, and our tokens and we were off to the fun upstairs!

I tried to get the boys to do some crafts when we first got there, but they saw the giant play area and they were off to play and burn off some energy.  There are two play areas, one for toddlers and one for big kids.  The boys thoroughly enjoyed BOTH play areas.  The big kid one was a little big for Cohen- but he has a big brother helping him so he wanted to be in the big kids one too.  The Toddler Play area has a life size Lite Brite, and some fun toys to bounce on- along with a smaller play area with slides.  The big kids play area has a lot of climbing spaces and fun slides.

Crayola Experience Spin Art

Each of us got 2 tokens and one voucher to decorate a cat.  There are some activities that do not need any tokens or vouchers- those you are able to do as many as you want.

We headed off to check out the plush cats.  It seems that the craft in this area does change periodically.  Today was a cat that the kids colored with markers- and then rinsed off, dried and were able to color again.  These cats were a hit.  The boys really enjoyed coloring them- washing them and repeating the process.  They are still a hit, even after we left.  The boys have carried these cats around and played with them for the last month.

Crayola Experience ClayThe Tokens- Each person receives two tokens with their ticket.  The tokens can be used for a variety of little take homes.  You can customize crayon wrappers- so we made everyone their own crayon.  You can get a small pack of crayons, a marker, or a pack of clay.  The clay is similar to play-doh and there are tables of tools that the kids can play with the clay there.  You can also buy additional tokens for $1 each.  Our favorite thing was the clay, because it was a nice hands on activity that we all enjoyed, but the personalized crayons were cool too!

All of the other activities you are welcome to do without tokens and as many times as you want.  There was a melted crayon spin art, melting crayons into molds, and another activity where there was a pen that melted crayons and you draw with the melted crayons.  All fun stuff!

The kiddos had a ball!  There are other activity stations- shows- experiments- and some add on crafts you have buy and make.  Definitely something fun to do if you are in Orlando and looking for something indoors to do on a hot or rainy day.

Remember teachers get a free one year membership (VIP Kid Teachers Count- just bring your 6 Apple Card) so if you are a teacher definitely take advantage of that special offer!

FTC Disclosure:  I received complimentary passes to the Crayola Experience.  However, all opinions in this post are my own honest opinions and not skewed based on receiving complimentary passes.

Exercise science- the new buzz word

Exercise science is a very wide term. It encompasses everything from fitness, to body movement, to diet and more. It is the study of the mechanism of human body movement, physical activity, and exercise. It studies how exercise should interact with the human body. It lends a scientific touch to fitness and to enable people to understand the physiological impact of exercise and its impact more objectively. Exercise science is used interchangeably with kinesiology. Both the terms are closely related. While exercise science is the effect of physical activity on the body; kinesiology includes the studies of biomechanics, motor control and physiological effects of exercise.  Exercise science typically covers areas of exercise physiology, kinesiology, sports medicine, human performance and physical education.

exercise science

How did it all begin?

During the early 20th century the subject of exercise science gained prominence. The resurgence of Olympic Games was a major contributor too. What was being studied at the time was the effect of exercise on the heart rate, lungs, and hemoglobin.  Exercising at higher altitudes, oxygen consumption and other related areas were also researched. This was also the time when insulin was synthesized for treatment of diabetes. Organizations, as well as, individuals woke up to the importance of fitness, physical activity and awareness about the same increased. Aerobics became a buzzword in addition to exercises like walking and jogging.

If you wish to pursue exercise science or are pursuing the same and are wondering about your prospects there are some useful resources like withmydegree.org out there. Sharing here some key terms associated with the discipline. The field of study in the discipline is fairly wide and a degree in the same can open several career paths for you. Though some of the more advanced occupations based on exercise might require further education.

Understanding the discipline of exercise science better

Kinesiology: It can be literally defined as the study of human movement. It can be broadly defined as the study of the biological, social, behavioral and developmental bases for physical activity, sports, etc.

Sports medicine: It deals directly with sports-related injuries also including injuries sustained during physical activity or exercise. It also covers the prevention and treatment of such injuries.

Exercise physiology: Though used interchangeably this is not the same exercise science. While exercise science might embody kinesiology, physical education, human performance and more, exercise physiology only covers a fixed a field of study. This is more or less standardized curriculum focused on physiology.

With increased interest and the need for fitness globally exercise science has become popular. It is an interesting field of study. There are several new discoveries in exercise science that have been path-breaking for the fitness industry; the 7-minute workout being one of them.  There have been studies projecting growth for the job prospects for exercise physiologists and athletic trainers. This is in addition to median salaries for professionals in the field also increasing. It is fast becoming the most versatile field of study.

Ways To Make Your Child’s Birthday Party Special

Planning a party for your child is an important task. It’s up to you to make sure it all goes off seamlessly. That’s why it’s important you plan ahead and come up with ways to make it exceptionally good.

While it’s normal to feel pressure, don’t overthink it so much that you stress yourself out. Let your child know you’ll do your best and hope to make it a very special occasion for them. Discuss who they want in attendance, so the right people are present. This will make all the difference. See ways to make your child’s birthday party special.

Involve them

Sit down with your child and ask them what they want. Be open and honest with each other about what the perfect day would look like and what’s actually possible. Make it clear that they may not get all of what they ask for, but that you’ll consider their suggestions. Some surprises are nice, but there’s no reason to make it all a surprise if that’s too much for you. That’s why it’s key you discuss with your child what they picture as the perfect party and what’s most important to them. Involving them takes pressure off of you and ensures they’ll be happy on the day of the event.

Design the Invitations

Make the party extra special by using a birthday invitation maker to create the invitations. There are no design skills necessary. Personalize the invitations using Adobe Spark’s easy-to-use templates and customize text, images, shape, color, decorations and more. A birthday is an important milestone in your child’s life, and you want it to be perfect. Do this by paying careful attention to the design and look of your invitations. You’ll be guided through the creation pathway until you’re at a point where you’re happy with your final product.

Hire Entertainment

A birthday party isn’t a party without some entertainment. Depending on your child’s age, look into clowns, inflatable bouncy houses, bands and more. Make sure there’s an activity or two for the kids to do at the party to keep them entertained and engaged. That’s why many families host the party at a venue where there are activities for the kids versus their home. The choice is yours, but if you have it at home, you’ll need to research entertainment ideas for the kids.

Order their Favorite Cake

Your child definitely cares about the cake. One place you can earn extra brownie points is by ordering their favorite cake. Include colors, images and text that speak to the birthday kid. Having a delicious dessert to serve toward the end of the party will make you a very popular person. Let the kids enjoy their cake and ice cream while you sit back and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

Conclusion

Throwing a birthday party for your child isn’t always easy. Remain calm and use these suggestions for making it a day to remember. These are ways to make your child’s birthday party special.

Moving Abroad With Your Family: Things You Need To Consider

Do you like the idea of starting fresh with your loved ones? Are you considering moving abroad and changing your entire lives? Then you’ll want to read this article carefully. Today, I’m going to highlight all the things you need to think about before pushing ahead. Making such a significant change in your life could have drastic consequences if you don’t cover all the bases. At the end of the day, you don’t want to end up coming back home after only six months. So, it’s vital that you perform as much research as possible and leave no stone unturned. If you do that, you could end up loving your new life and turning it into something special. If you don’t do that, there is a good chance you could regret the move further down the line. I’ll do my best to cover everything in this post, but you still need to use some common sense along the way.

Finding accommodation abroad

You’re going to need somewhere to live if you want to move overseas. It’s sensible to buy a property if you have enough money. You can always sell it if you change your mind and decide to go home. When all’s said and done, you’re wasting your money if you rent a home anywhere in the world. Wherever you plan to move, you should find a house or condominium for sale within your budget. You just need to search online for local estate agents before you plan to move. Get in touch with them and explain your situation. With a bit of luck, they will come back to you with a list of suitable properties. Of course, it’s handy if you can visit the country and view them before you move. However, that isn’t always possible. So, you might have to make a deal based on photographs and paperwork alone.

Checking the job market

There is no getting away from the fact that you will have to work if you want to live abroad. Most people won’t have enough money in the bank to live a life of luxury. Thankfully, there are job sites online that list vacancies all over the world. So, it’s possible to undertake your interview and get a position before you fly to the country. However, in most instances, you will have to attend interviews after you arrive. Just make sure you set up as many as possible. That way, someone is sure to offer you some form of work. Also, it’s worth mentioning that you need to research workers rights and other related issues. Some countries don’t provide their workforce with the same protections as they experience in the United States. You need to understand the ins and outs so you can make the right decisions.

Understanding the tax system

The last thing anyone wants is to get into trouble with the tax authorities in a foreign country. That is especially the case if you don’t speak the language. Finding a reputable accountant is the first thing you need to do. However, it’s also sensible to research the tax system in advance. In most countries, everything is pretty similar. Even so, you need to have information about the rates of tax you will pay. Only then can you accurately plan your budget and work out how much money you can afford to spend. Shop around when it comes to finding an accountant. Look for a local professional who also speaks your language. That should limit the chances of anything going wrong due to a communication issue.

Finding schools for your kids

You’ll want to make sure your kids get the best start in life possible. For that reason, you’ll have to ensure you put them in the best schools your money can afford. Most countries offer state education to homegrown students. However, those schools aren’t always suitable for foreigners. That is because the teachers might not speak English, and they don’t have specialist training for international students. However, there are going to be lots of private schools that do offer those services. It’s up to you to make sure you research them and get a placement for your children. You’ll have to factor the cost of their education into your budget too. While it’s usually cheaper abroad than at home, it’s still going to place a strain on your finances. That is, of course, unless you have a lump sum from the sale of your current home.

Building a social circle

Living in another country is going to feel rather lonely if you don’t make some new friends. So, you’ll have to make an extra effort to talk to the people you meet every day. Try to build a social circle by seeking individuals with the same tastes and interests as you. You could even search online for groups that meet in particular areas. Maybe you like the idea of joining a team of ramblers? Perhaps you enjoy the thought of finding drinking buddies? Whatever the situation, you can use the internet and social media to make contacts. If that doesn’t work, you just need to head about and make an effort to communicate with people. You can do that regardless of the language barrier. Everyone smiles and laughs at the same things no matter where they were born.

Staying connected to friends and family

You won’t want to lose contact with your friends and family when you move abroad. At the end of the day, you never know if something will go wrong and you have to return home. So, make sure the locations you consider have access to decent WiFi connections. You can connect to the internet in most places around the world these days. However, that isn’t always the case in some developing nations. So, just search online and perform some research in advance. If there are towns where you can’t get an internet connection, you should find places nearby where you can. With that in mind, it all comes down to selecting the right towns, villages, and cities. Don’t set your heart on somewhere until you know it matches your essential criteria.

Taking a look at local crime rates

Nobody wants to move to an area with high crime rates. If you do that, you might struggle to sleep at night. That is especially the case if burglaries happen a lot in the local area. So, you need to search for the best information and read it carefully. In the UK and the US, most police organizations release crime figures for the public to see. That isn’t always the case in foreign countries. However, you can usually get a good idea of the situation if you look online. Just read news articles reporting a crime in those areas. Many of the journalists will include figures and statistics to make their posts interesting. You can also contact the travel officers of the government in your home country. Let them know your plans, and they should provide you with advice and guidance.

As you can see from the points on this page, moving abroad with your family is not a simple task. There are many different things you need to consider before you’re ready. The process could take twelve months or longer depending on your situation. You might have to put your home on the market and wait for it to sell. Also, you have to obtain permission before moving to another country and buying a home. Some governments around the world will make you jump through hoops to get that. In many instances, you aren’t going to move to a different nation with full citizenship rights. That means even if you purchase a home, the government can kick you out whenever they like. Bear that in mind, and good luck!

Our super fun day at Breakfast with the Bunny at the Akron Zoo

What a fun day we had at Breakfast with the Bunny at the Akron Zoo!  We packed up our cooler, packed up our kids, packed up the van and off we went at 7:30 AM to get to the zoo before 8:30 for a super fun day!  And just to clarify… there are 8 of us all together.  So 2 babies, 4 children, and 2 adults.

Welcome to the Zoo

We got there at 8:30 and they started letting people in shortly after that and we headed to Komodo Cafe for a Buffet Breakfast.  The breakfast food was DELICIOUS!  Pancakes, Sausage, Home Fries, fruit, orange juice, coffee… YUM.  The buffet was definitely nice and a GREAT start to our day.  (with full bellies!)

Crafts!  They had a few simple craft options for the little ones to do.  They could choose between a butterfly, an airplane, or coloring a paper egg.  These were all simple enough for the preschool aged children, but also fun for the school aged children.

cohen with the EB 2017

A visit with the Easter Bunny!  What was nice about this event is that you do need a special ticket to attend and they only sell so many.  So there was not a long line to visit the Easter Bunny and when we got up there I didn’t feel rushed like you do at the mall.  We have a few little ones that are afraid of costumed characters (and stuffed animals… Caleb…) so we needed the time to visit with Mr. Easter Bunny.

The Easter Egg Hunt.  This was the highlight for our gang.  Everyone talked about the Easter Egg Hunt ALL day.  First- how cool is it that the Egg Hunt takes place in the zoo, like where you walk to see the animals!  Second- the eggs were not filled with candy, instead the eggs were empty and you turned in the eggs for a goodie bag after the egg hunt.  There were two special Golden Eggs that you got an extra special prize with- I have no idea what that prize was since we did not find any Golden Eggs.  BUT- the goodie bags were very nice and included a cute stuffed animal along with some other small trinkets.  What was nice for this mom was that those stuffed animals doubled as souvenirs from the zoo.

After the egg hunt you had until 10:30 to visit with the Easter Bunny and then we were able to enjoy the Akron Zoo for the rest of the day and the kids had a ball!!

Day at the Akron Zoo

Would I recommend Breakfast with the Bunny?  YES!  This was a really fun day for our kids and I feel like everyone should experience a special event at the Akron Zoo at least once– or maybe even a yearly tradition!  This was the first time we had the opportunity to do something like this and I really felt it was worth the price tag (a big question I got when I was telling people that we were going).

Factors into the price:  #1- The breakfast buffet!  This an all you can eat, good quality meal.
#2 The Easter Activities- Visit with the bunny with virtually no line (umm- have you waited more than an hour at the mall– because that was us at Christmas time with Santa!), a personalized-no-rush visit with the bunny, a fun egg hunt IN the zoo, and a craft!
#3 The goodie bag had a stuffed animal so we saved money having to buy souvenirs for 6 kids.  (that is like $10 per kid right there!)
#4 Admission to the Zoo!
#5 – Free Parking too- and we got a close spot!

So yes- take your kids to check out Breakfast with the Bunny at the Akron Zoo.  There is still ONE more day left for you go this year (April 15th), and if you can’t make it to that day, please be on the look out for this event for next year!

Our visit to Castaway Bay in Sandusky Ohio

My family got the opportunity to visit Cedar Point’s Indoor Water Park: Castaway Bay in Sandusky, Ohio last weekend.  We definitely had a ball.  The two older boys kept saying over and over again about how much fun they were having and that really made this mom happy- and when they say it without you asking about it, you know they are having a great time.

First- I have to say the room set up was AWESOME.  We stayed in a Tarpon Suite, I think it was a Bay View because we had a view of the water and that was really nice, especially since the weather was kind of nice so we did enjoy sitting on the balcony a bit.  The best part about the Tarpon Suite is that it has a King Sized bed and then a separate room for the kiddos with 4 bunk beds.  This gave mom and dad a bit of privacy and the kids not only had their own area for play and relaxing, but also their own beds.  So no fighting over bed sharing!!

Castaway Bay Tarpon Suite

Like any family, we quickly unpacked and got into our suites and headed down to the water park.  The kids were excited, parents are excited, and we were ready to go!  The Indoor Water Park is just what we needed during these cold winter months (which actually aren’t THAT cold this year- but still not hot enough that we are enjoying any type of outdoor swimming in Ohio).  It is 80 degrees in the water park, so you have that warm tropical weather and it is nice and warm when going between activities in your wet swimsuit.

There are a variety of activities for all ages too!  The littlest ones and I spent most of our time in the Toddler Tidepool, which is complete with three small slides, and a few other splashing activities for the little ones.  Caleb really enjoyed the slides!!  Things we all enjoyed were the Creature Cove (has basketball hoops, and floating snakes and other creatures to play on), the Wave Pool, and Lookout Lagoon’s Family Funhouse.

Castaway Bay Water Park

The older kids enjoyed the slides!  That is what they spent most of their days doing, going up and down the slides!  There is one cool raft slide that is either one or two person, a set of 3 speed slides, and some other fun slides that are on the Lookout Lagoon Family Funhouse.  They also said they liked going in the hot tub, which would be the Grotto.

So the waterpark itself got two thumbs up from the kids and the parents.  BUT Castaway Bay offers other things to do as well, so if you get tired of the water and need a break there are other options.  Club Castaway has crafts offered from 10-2 every day.  And at night they have a dance party and a movie followed by a meet and greet with Snoopy!

My kiddos got to color shirts during our stay in Club Castaway and while they were doing that I chatted with the team member on duty and she told me that they have more activities on Saturdays, where they have a movie playing and the kids can make their own trail mix.  Our stay was a Sunday to Monday, and we did not make it to Club Castaway until Monday morning and they did have a movie playing during the craft when we were there.

There are also a variety of restaurants.  We ate at Quaker Steak and Lube for dinner (Tip: Ask to sit at the worst table to get 10% off your total bill!), and got snacks and lunch at Big Daddy’s Snack Shack that is inside the water park.  There is also Mango Mike’s, which is a breakfast buffet, and Ebb and Eddy’s which has coffee, quick breakfast items and lunch (we got Starbuck’s Coffee here in the morning).  There is also an upscale dining restaurant available at Bay Harbor and of course Room Service as well.

We also hit up the arcade just before we left on Monday- and honestly had the waterpark and arcade been open longer, we would have stayed longer!!  But we promised the boys that we would do the arcade so we stopped in.  Colton was super excited because I was able to win him an Ocalot (Minecraft) stuffed toy from one of the machines.  (Super Cool Mom Points for me!)

Oh- if you aren’t signed up for Castaway Bay Birthday Club, you definitely need to sign your kids up.  Caleb’s birthday is coming up, so he got to redeem his Birthday Coupon while we were there and it included: A Free slice of Pizza from Big Daddy’s Snack Shack, 16 Free Game credits at the Arcade, and a free craft at Club Castaway.  If you aren’t staying the night, you can redeem the Birthday Club certificate for a free day pass to the water park!

Castaway Bay is a great resort to get in a bit of a mini vacation close to home.  We definitely needed a little getaway and the smiles on the boys’ faces tells me they had a blast too!  They often run specials, and I have seen special rates on Groupon too, so if you need a deal to be able to go, check out their site and keep an out out on Groupon to get the best rate for a mini vacation for your family!

Thank you to Cedar Point and Castaway Bay for hosting our family, so I can share this experience on Mommy Has A Life
