Holiday Gift Guide 2017 FOR BABIES

The holiday is fast approaching and if you are like me- you are starting your christmas shopping now so you are not swamped trying to shop last minute.  I have two little ones that fall into this category so I am going to be sharing some items that I think would make good gifts for the 3 and under kids.

I am still accepting prospective gifts to be added to this list, so if you are interested, please send an email to: mommyhasalife@gmail.com

Go! Go! Smart Wheels® Press & Race Vehicles

Vtech Go! Go! Racers!

The VTech Go! Go! Smart Wheels Press & Race cars are a huge hit for both of my boys.  Just like it sounds, you press down on the car and it zooms across the floor!  They also make light up, make sounds and play music, which adds to the excitement for the boys.  The new Press & Race vehicles include a race car, dump truck and fire truck.  The retail price point on these is $8.99 each.  Perfect for a stocking stuffer or a gift for a young child.

Sophie the Giraffe

sophie the giraffe

Sophie has been a staple in our house for all the babies.  Starting with Colton- who is now 8- had a Sophie.  She is a great toy for teething babies to gnaw on, because she is soft and has lots of places that little hands can grasp.  As a mom, I feel confident letting my little one gnaw on Sophie over other teether because she is made of 100% Natural Rubber (phthalates Free) and food-grade paint. She is also great for toddlers for role playing as my two year old still plays with his Sophie- only now Sophie goes for rides on the bus or train :-) .  You can get Sophie the Giraffe on Amazon  for between $20 and $30 depending on what package you choose- they have several options- Sophie by herself, Sophie with a book, Sophie with a teether, Sophie with a plush Sophie… I think your loved one will be thrilled with any of them so you can pick one that will fit their needs the most!

Boppy Pillow

Boppy

The Boppy Pillow is a great gift for new babies.  A lot of moms rave about it as a nursing support.  Personally I liked it for two things.  To prop baby up on– either for tummy time or just to sit in so he wasn’t laying flat on the floor.  Once my little ones got a little older, it was great to sit them in to help them sit up in that wobbly stage of he can kind of sit up, but not really and we don’t want him to fall backwards.  If you have a little one on your list- this is a great gift because it isn’t a toy, but more of something that is needed for development.  I have 3 kids and feel like 3 for 3… I needed a boppy.

I also want to add that I HIGHLY recommend the Boppy Water Resistant Cover to go with this.  Babies spit up, toddlers spill drinks… heck- mom spills too!  My oldest has asthma and a dust and mold trigger so these covers on pillows is a must in our house.  Even so- I am sure you don’t want moisture seeping into your pillow that your baby will be sitting on- so get this cover too :-)

Exergen Temporal Artery Scan Thermometer

image001

This is another great gift that is more of a necessity than a toy- but still something parents will thank you for when they have a sick child.  I love it when my kids get toys, but sometimes the amount of toys around the holidays is overwhelming and I am really thankful for the kids to get things they need.  This would be one of those gifts.  We have this thermometer and I feel it is ACCURATE and fast.  It took me a few times of using it to get the hang of how it works, but once I figured it out it is a breeze.

Family (and Friends) Tree

Here’s a no-fuss way to display all the holiday cards that arrive in your mailbox each day. And don’t worry: Washi tape pulls right off the wall without damaging the paint. What to do Use a pencil and yardstick to mark the three points of a large triangle (ours measures 5 x 3¼ feet). Apply ¾-inch-wide washi tape, as desired, to create the tree outline, and add a trunk that’s centered at the bottom. Use removable mounting squares to hang the cards and a sparkly pom-pom on top.

Great Ideas for a Holiday Centerpiece

It is December and Christmas is here! I know a lot of people have their holiday decorations up already. I’m so excited for the holidays and have a few craft ideas to try out. I’ve got a few ideas for you, though, if you are looking for the perfect holiday centrepiece for your table.

Use Christmas Candy

A cute but simple idea for a centrepiece is to use candy. A clear vase filled with candy canes would look so cute. Or how about little red and white mints? Using candy is the ultimate no-fuss arrangement and there are so many options. How about using marshmallows too? You could tie a ribbon around the vase and voila!

Christmas Tree Baubles

If you have some spare baubles from the Christmas tree decorating, they can look cute turned into a centrepiece. In a large vase or a hurricane candle holder, place baubles of different shapes and sizes for a varied look. I think the best effect is using baubles of a similar colour but slightly different. If there are some that are plain, and some that are striped perhaps, it can add a lovely textured look. Some great candle holders can be bought online at Koch.

Opt for Using a Tray

Using a tray as the main part of your centrepiece can look so striking. It makes the centrepiece easily portable, but also adds different layers and textures. I think the best look using trays, is choosing a tray that is a different shape to your table. For example, if your dining room table is square or rectangular, a square or rectangular tray will look boxy. A circular tray would be a much better option. Likewise, if you have a circular table, a square tray would look the best. If you have a mirrored tray in at home, this one would look perfect to use as the base. No need to splash out to buy one of those, though!

Go for Classic Colours

For a beautiful setting go for traditional holiday colours. Red and green can look beautiful. I think going for a few different sized vases can look cute. If they were filled with something red like cranberries, you could get some holly or other green foliage from outside, to wrap around the vases. When going for more than one vase, I think it is always best to go for an odd number, rather than even. It just looks so much nicer!

Use a Table Runner

I think most people will have a table cloth as part of their table setting on Christmas day. Not everyone will have a table runner, though. Table runners can look stunning though. Choose a contrasting colour to the table cloth, but one that compliments the centrepiece, and your table will be set.

I hope these tips are useful to you and you’ll find one of the ideas for a centrepiece that will work for you and your home. I hope you and  your family have a very happy holiday season!

Big Saving Tips For Moms Who Have Busy Lives

Winter is coming, in fact, it’s pretty much here, and that means two things for parents. First, it’s time to switch to high gear when buying those Christmas presents because you know we’re in the midst of the sales. Second the house is going to be quite chilly without the heating up, and that means big house bills. So, it’s largely to do with money. Don’t get me wrong I love winter and the snow. I can’t wait for the little ones to go out and enjoy it. I love seeing Santa in the malls, and I adore getting my home all Christmassy. But, it’s also a good time to start think about saving money without ruining the magic. That means cutting back on spending in areas that don’t relate to Christmas. You may not realise this but most of the time my life is jam packed. I don’t usually have time to think about these savings in great depth. But this year that’s going to change because I’ve written this fantastic list on how to save money without thinking about it too much.

Get The Deals

Amazing Deals
Picture Location

I know on Friday the malls and high streets were packed with crazy moms and dads desperate to get everything at floor pricing. But I wasn’t in that massive crowd I promise you. I don’t have time for Black Friday, and I don’t have the patience or the bravery. Instead, I wait until Cyber Monday. All the online stores step in and slash their prices for a good week. I love this because it means that I can shop at bargain value from the comfort of my own home. It’s no sweat at all, and there are always great deals to choose from.

Use The Vouchers

Of course, it’s not just the deals that you need to look out for. You should also think about looking for online vouchers. These vouchers can be used during the sales to cut the prices down even further, and I’m a sucker for seeking them out. One of my favorite websites is discountrue.com. There you’ll find savings for shops like Kohls. They’ve got great deals on everything from clothing to appliances and anything in between.

Buy In Bulk

When the deals are on you’d be crazy not to buy in bulk. Particularly, if it’s something that you know you’re going to need and that doesn’t have a use by date. I know it sounds crazy but if there’s a great deal on it’s smart sense to buy things like tea bags, coffee and whatever else you can find in large quantities. That way you’ll always have it in, and you can cross it off your weekly shop.

Cut Energy Costs

Piggy Bank

Remember I mentioned winter and high energy bills? Well, there are easy ways to make sure this isn’t a problem. First, you need to think about easy ways you can keep your home warm. The best way is to improve your home insulation, but this is quite expensive. You’ll probably need to upgrade your windows, and that can cost a couple grand. This sounds counter productive, but you will see how much you are saving by doing this, quite rapidly. At the end of December, your home bills will have been slashed.

You can also consider just using simpler energy saving methods. For instance, I’m planning on getting some LED lights for my home and my Christmas tree this year. It will save huge amounts on electric costs, and they last for thousands of hours. So, you won’t have to worry about replacing them every few months. LED lights are even better than the halogen energy saving brands.

Of course, the easiest way to save on energy prices without any hassle is to check your energy provider. It’s possible they’re not offering you the best rates for your electric and heating. If that’s the case, it might be worth switching to a cheaper provider. You can price check your energy rates at eonenergy.com

Price Check

Since I mentioned price checking, I have to point out how much I actually price check products. You might have noticed that I’ve been posting about Skylander toys recently. They’re sure to be popular this Christmas, and I know my little boy wants a couple. But before I buy them you can bet I’ll be price checking them online to find the best deals. But you should do this with all your purchases, not just presents. Price check everything from insurance to films, and you’ll save a lot of money over the year.

I hope you find my cost cutting ideas helpful looking after your home and family.

Celebrity Kids and GenerationOn Team up to give back to the Community this Holiday Season

Last week generationOn and Disney Friends for Change along with hundreds LA families made some Christmas magic for children in the community on Family Volunteer Day (November 22nd).  Volunteers spent the day at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA doing various volunteer activities like wrapping gifts and writing out cards for less fortunate children.

Family Volunteer 1

Some of the volunteers even included some celebrities like “Parenthood’s,” Xolo Mariduena, TV actor Max Page (The Bridge, CBS’s Extant and The Young and The Restless) and Josh Rush (Clarence and Mr. Peabody & Sherman).

Family Volunteer

This volunteer effort was a part of generationON’s Family Volunteer Day.  generationON encourages families to come together to do good for their community.  “Coming together and volunteering as a family shows kids first-hand how even one act of caring can make a real difference in someone else’s life,” said Mike Strautmanis, vice president of Strategic Programs, Corporate Citizenship at Disney. “Disney is proud to continue our sponsorship of Family Volunteer Day to inspire kids and families to develop a lifelong love of service and share in our commitment to creating a brighter tomorrow.”

Families are encouraged to share their story at www.generationon.org/fvd for a chance to win one of twenty “family night out” prize packages, and ten families with amazing service impact stories will be selected for inclusion in a fall issue of FamilyFun Magazine.  Volunteer activities can range from any number of things like a park clean up, donating gifts, making cards for kids that are in the hospital, or any activity that is helping their community.

How To Give The Best Kids’ Party Ever

Your darling little one has been pestering you for weeks to have a big Christmas party with all his friends invited. Where has it come from? Nobody knows, but you know if you don’t at least try to hold a good one, you will never hear the end of it! Having a festive party for kids needn’t be as hard as you think it is. Our childminders are all at it this year, having the kids make little hats and help with the nibbles. Getting the kids involved in the party planning can be a huge part of the process.

When your children are excited about the party, make sure they are helping you with all the work too. Simple tasks like clearing away all their toys to make room, can be enormously helpful to you on the day. Your little one could help cut out the shapes for the rest of the kids to stick on to their party hats later on. He could even dress the table ready for the food to be laid out too.

Kids Birthday Party

If you have jelly, stirring the mix is a task even the tiniest tots love to do. Home baked cookies can be mixed up, baked and decorated by your children to be added to the party spread. Balloons are a huge part of any kids’ party. If you are blowing them all up yourselves, make sure they are kept out of reach of under threes, who may put them in their mouths and choke. You could use a balloon company like www.balloonsgalore.co.uk to supply you with as many as you require.

Party games are central to any kids’ party too. Remember your party only needs to be an hour or so long, so pick three or four games that most kids will know. Favorite birthday party games include dancing to Christmas music for musical statues and pass the Christmas sack, where everyone gets a chance to take one small present. This is much like pass the parcel.

Food can be quick and simple party food, much like a birthday party, but instead of birthday cake, have some Christmas cake or Yule Log cake on hand. Your home baked festive biscuits will go down a treat too. Pizza fingers can be decorated with toppings to look like Christmas crackers. Drinks can be served in festive cups that can be found in places like your local supermarket at this time of year.

Of course, once the party is over, your little one may be too tired to help with the clean-up! Try to encourage him to get involved, as it is a great life lesson for your child to learn that great things require great work. Hopefully, things will run smoothly, and your kids will be happy with the outcome of their party. Having your children getting involved with all aspects of the party will also help them feel they have contributed greatly to the household. It will give them a sense of responsibility and make them feel quite grown up.
